INKO FORUM, as a professional organisation, was founded in 1996 with the objective of consolidating the general issues pertaining to urinary incontinence -i.e. the dysfunction of urine continence and passage -, and to provide support and assistance to individuals effected by the disease either directly or indirectly. The renowned representatives of six medical fields -neurology, psychiatry, geriatrics, rehabilitation, urology and gynaecology -take an active role in drawing the attention of the public, the health care professionals and decision makers to the significance of this area with the aim of making the diagnosis, the treatment and the required accessories available to all concerned. The estimated number of incontinence cases in Hungary is half a million. This means that incontinence is an everyday problem for one in every five Hungarian families. INKO FORUM is hoping that the treatment for incontinence, a problem which either permanently or temporarily effects a large portion of society, will result in the improvement of the quality of life and the development of public tolerance by means of education.

On October 1, 1997, INKO FORUM launched a free telephone hotline related to incontinence, i.e. the disorder of urine continence and aconuresis, called Inko Line. The hotline can be reached by calling 06-80-630-007 between 16:00 and 20:00 on Tuesdays, 09:00 and 13:00 on Fridays and 12:00 and 16:00 on Saturdays. The information made available through this hotline makes it possible for the patients and their relatives to obtain an understanding of incontinence and acquaint themselves with the treatment methods in a discreet manner. In addition to providing basic information about the disease (the potential causes, types, diagnoses and treatments of incontinence), the main objective of Inko Line is to refer the callers to the appropriate specialist.

In support of the ongoing development of professional knowledge on the widest possible scale, INKO FORUM organises professional conferences, training courses, round table discussions and meetings both in Hungary and abroad. The events organised for doctors assist day-to-day medical work through discussions related to the hot issues of incontinence, the dissemination of the most recent scientific results and the discussion of practical issues.

INKO FORUM not only pursues educational and health improvement activities, but also disseminates the most recent research and therapeutic solutions to the profession. INKO FORUM aims to provide continuous professional assistance to colleagues, therefore, four years ago, we launched Inko Inform, a publication covering every possible aspect of incontinence. This informative medical periodical is published in 12,000 copies and delivered to family doctors and other specialists (gynaecologists, nephrologists, gerontologists, rehabilitation specialists, neurologists and psychiatrists). The reports and articles written by renowned authors serve to provide guidance to colleagues in this underrated field. The periodical considers it a responsibility to announce any conferences and events in the field of incontinence in Hungary and abroad, as well as the publication of the summaries thereof .

INKO FORUM provides outstanding support to the high level education of the healers and nurses of the future in the field of incontinence. Every year, as a tradition, INKO FORUM announces a professional scientific competition for three groups of students. The studies of the participants (medical, health aid and physiotherapy students) taking part in the competition are closely related to incontinence. Their future work as counselors and healers can significantly contribute to the solution of the problems of incontinent patients.

The competition targeted at family doctors also attempts to draw attention to the problems of incontinence.

By means of the biannual competition for journalists, INKO FORUM encourages journalists to draw the attention of the general public, incontinence patients, their relatives and the decision makers to the significance of incontinence through their professional activities.
